Saar Niermeijer studied Dutch Literary Studies (rMA) at the University of Amsterdam. Her research interest include culinary culture, cultural sociology and the literary representation of food. She wrote her thesis on ‘democratic distinction strategies’ in the cookbooks of Dutch literary authors Ingmar Heytze, Ronald Giphart and Abdelkader Benali. Currently she is planning a PhD-project that sets out to investigate how cookery books have performed class and national identities throughout the construction of Dutch modernity (‘Developing a Taste for the Dutch: Cookbooks, Social Distinction and the Construction of Dutch National Self-Images between 1750 and the Present’). The proposed paper is a case study of this intended project.
